This shows that a fibre optical sensor may be used to follow the state of charge in real time and to provide optical information from the electrode material. The interaction between a fibre optic evanescent wave sensor and the positive electrode material, lithium iron phosphate, in a battery cell is presented.
The use of fibre optic sensors in batteries may also reveal additional information about the optical properties of battery materials, which could be useful in battery research and development and could open up new directions within spectroelectrochemistry for studying lithium-ion batteries.
